Belbin Team Roles

The KN3W IDEAS process and tools are designed to help teams to not only think differently, but to thinking together.

To ensure the right balance of  thinking styles, KN3W IDEAS uses Belbin Team Skills to  optimise team composition.

Each participant is sent a link about 3 weeks before the workshop, and they are asked to complete a Belbin Self-Perception Inventory  and  get six of their colleagues to complete a very simple Observer Assessment. KN3W IDEAS then, in consultation with the project leader , groups participants into well balanced teams with the optimal spread of different thinking styles.

The Belbin Team Roles is a very powerful tool that can provide extremely valuable insight into  grouping individuals into teams that really work well together to deliver optimal performance through understanding individual’s behavioural tendencies based on the 9 Belbin Team Roles profiles. The 9 Team Roles were developed by Dr. Meredith Belbin from his work at Henley Management College, and reflect an individual bias within three broad groups – Action, Social and Thinking.

The Belbin Team Roles assessment includes 360-degree feedback from observers as well as the individual's own evaluation of their behaviour, and contrasts how they see their behaviour versus how their colleagues do. The Belbin Team Roles Inventory scores people on how strongly they express traits from 9 different Team Roles. Individuals may and often do exhibit strong tendencies towards multiple Team Roles.

KN3W IDEAS believes teams work best when team members know their roles, work to their strengths and actively manage weaknesses. The KN3W IDEAS tools and templates have been designed to get all Belbin Team Role tendencies working together optimally by providing;

• organised thinking space for the Monitor Evaluator, Plants and Specialists,  and then
• engaging the more Social Thinking  Resource Investigators, Teamworkers and Coordinators in collaborative information sharing activities, while
• satisfying the Shapers, Implementers and Completer Finishers with organisation, structure and direction.
